While throwing an apple at someone in the modern era would be considered rude, in ancient Greece it was considered a declaration of love from the thrower to the receiver. This was because the apple was considered to be a sacred symbol of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, and to throw it was to make an offering to Aphrodite that your love for that person may blossom.
