Olympic Gold Medals are mostly made out of silver

Due to the insane cost - combined with the weakness of gold - Olympic gold medals are actually sterling silver coated in a thin layer of gold. This adds some strength to the medal while keeping costs from being unnecessarily high. Olympic silver medals are also made out of silver - duh - while Olympic bronze medals are made from bronze.
