Boxing films were around a long time before the Italian Stallion nearly defeated Apollo Creed in Rocky I. In 1894, Thomas Edison recorded the first sport ever filmed. It was a heavyweight boxing match between then-heavyweight champion James J. Corbett and a local amateur boxer by the name of Peter Courtney. It is one of the first things that Edison ever recorded. Since then, more boxing movies have been made than movies about any other sport. There is quite a simple explanation for this, as it is easier to film 2 people than a larger sports team, and movie fans love the aggression in boxing.
