For as long as ice cream has been around, vanilla and chocolate have been pitted against each other like mortal enemies. In reality, vanilla and chocolate are like family, with vanilla being a key component in making chocolate. Chocolate is made up primarily of sugar, milk, cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, lecithin, and vanilla. Vanilla adds some creaminess and bite to the flavor of chocolate. So while vanilla and chocolate may seem like enemies fighting for ice cream supremacy, they are actually both needed in order to exist at all.
