Margherita pizza is named after a queen

Although it does not make a lot of sense when you think about it, many of us probably thought that Margherita Pizza and the Margerita were somehow related, despite the fact that they come from 2 completely different cultures and are not even spelled the same way. The real root of the Margherita pizza comes from the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, in 1889. It honored the unification of Italy, as the toppings are green (basil), red (tomato sauce), and white (mozzarella), the same three colors of the Italian flag.
