German chocolate cake is named after a person and not the country

Of course, everyone knows that German chocolate cake was invented in Germany, right? While it may seem too straight forward to have any other answer, that is simply not true. Sam German, an American man living in 1852, invented a style of sweet baking chocolate for the company he worked for, Baker’s Chocolate Company. The company named this style of cake after him, however, the type of cake did not become popular until 1957, meaning that the original reason behind the name got lost in the 100-year gap between creation and popularity.
