Tom Hanks did not receive a salary for Forrest Gump

Tom Hanks really believed in Forrest Gump. During filming, the studio refused to increase the money the film could spend. Hanks, already a fairly large actor, declined his salary so that the money could go towards the film. He then also paid for 2 scenes, including the iconic scene of Gump running across America, out of his own pocket. In return, re would receive a portion of the film’s earnings. Forrest Gump ended up making over 1 billion dollars worldwide, with Hanks pocketing over 65 million.
