Before Google launched Gmail, "G-Mail" was the name of a free email service offered by Garfield's website

Remember Garfield the cat? Orange, liked lasagna, hated Mondays? Well, it turns out that he actually “owned” Gmail before Google did. Fans of the fictional fat orange cat could create their own vanity emails that were at “G-Mail”, as in “Garfield Mail”. So while they do sound similar, Garfield Mail and the Gmail we think of now never really overlapped, and Google was not required to buy the domain or name in order to make the modern days Gmail.
