There were female gladiators in ancient Rome

While everyone may know the bloody history of the Colosseum in Ancient Rome and the gladiators who fought within it, not many people know that there were female gladiators as well. Called a gladiatrix, a female gladiator found herself in all of the predicaments as her male counterparts. Gladiatrices fought one another, dueled with wild animals such as lions or tigers, and entertained audiences with their martial prowess at games and festivals. While little is known about the gladiatrix at present, historians and researchers are finding more evidence of them as they dive deeper into Ancient Rome.
