The Starry Night depicts Vincent van Gogh's view from the Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum

Like many famous artists, Vinvent Van Gogh was known for his eccentricity. He did famously cut off his own ear, after all. So, with that in mind, maybe it is not surprising that he was placed in an insane asylum called the Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum. Still, being put in the sanatorium was not all bad for Van Gogh, as he painted his famous Starry Night while looking out his window there. He painted it in June of 1889.
