The horse on a statue tells you how the figure died

When looking at statues in both the United States and the United Kingdom, where the front hooves of the horse are will tell you how the rider died. If the horse has both front legs rearing into the air, the rider died in battle. If the horse has one leg on the ground and one in the air, the rider was wounded in battle and died later on. If the horse has all hooves on the ground, the rider died outside of battle.
