Crayola means "oily chalk"

Crayola is a name that describes exactly what it is. The name Crayola, which started off as a crayon making company only, comes from a French heritage. It can be broken into two words. The first is “craie”, which is French for “chalk”, and the second is “ola”, which is French for “oily”. Crayola was the first widespread creator of crayons, which are now a beloved staple in kindergarten classrooms across the country.
