Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day

Before officially becoming Memorial Day in 1967, the holiday was first known as Decoration Day for the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags. In 1967, federal law declared "Memorial Day" as the official name of the holiday that still stands today.
