Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day where people would decorate graves with flowers, wreaths and flags in honor of those lost during the Civil War. In 1967, federal law officially changed the name to "Memorial Day" and now the holiday honors anyone who died in any war while serving with the United States military.
