Bald eagles have been the national symbol of the United States since 1782

Almost every American knows that the the bald eagle is the United States' national bird and national animal but how many know why? It was chosen June 20, 1782 as the country's emblem because of its long life, great strength and majesty as well as because at the time, it was believed to be native to North America. The bald eagle also happens to build the largest nest of any North American bird which seems pretty symbolic to the United States in many ways.
