Maybe it makes sense to you that elephants cannot jump. After all, they are gigantic and extremely heavy, and jumping would surely put a lot of unneeded stress on their knees. However, animals like the rhino and hippo, similarly gigantic and heavy animals, can still jump, so maybe there is something else going on. Unlike all other mammals, elephants’ leg bones all point downwards, which means they are physically unable to create any sort of ‘spring’ upwards. It is thought they evolved this way as it allows them to be more sturdy with their massive frame.
