A pelican's beak can hold more food than its belly

If you have ever heard the phrase “my eyes were bigger than my stomach”, then you just might have something in common with a pelican. Pelican beaks are larger than their stomachs, making them able to pick up and carry food that they cannot actually swallow. Of course, this usually works in their favor, as when they pick up fish, they also tend to pick up a large amount of water. This water is then dumped, while the fish is swallowed.
